South Africa has unveiled the prototype of its new digital government platform, #MyMzansi, enabling citizens to renew their driver’s licenses in minutes.

The launch took place at the Global Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) Summit, marking a major milestone in the country’s push toward efficient, inclusive, and tech-driven public services.

Communications Minister Solly Malatsi described the platform as a transformative leap in service delivery, particularly for South Africa’s 6.5 million licensed drivers. “This is the future – quick, secure, and inclusive,” Malatsi said, aligning the initiative with the country’s Vision 2030 digital economy strategy.

Developed through public-private collaboration, #MyMzansi integrates seamlessly with national databases to verify identities, update records, and issue digital credentials. The platform is zero-rated, allowing users to access services without incurring data charges—a move aimed at expanding accessibility.

The live demonstration highlighted the platform’s potential to eliminate bureaucratic delays that often stretch license renewals into weeks. Early trials indicate up to 80% faster processing times, though challenges such as rural connectivity remain.

Dr. Lindiwe Zulu of the Digital Economy Council praised the initiative as a model for the continent. “It empowers citizens, cuts costs, and fights fraud,” she said, noting its alignment with broader e-governance reforms, including digital visas and electronic health records.

The #MyMzansi launch signals South Africa’s commitment to modernizing public services and building a digitally inclusive society. Full rollout plans are expected to follow after further testing and stakeholder consultations.
